Glaciers to Queenstown Arthur Pass

Updated: Mar 16, 2023

This was an extraordinary drive. It did not feel anywhere near as long as it was. Low cloud below the mountains in Karangarua

After much discussion along the way about what we would eat in the evening, we passed a salmon fishery, www.hookwanaka.nz

The delightful chef was busy preparing for a private function in the evening but happily sold us some salmon for our bbq. It was freshly caught that morning and was fabulous.

We stayed at Top 10, at Arthurs point, just few kms outside Queenstown but equally convenient for next day's long drive.

We met some nice Spanish young guys who were in a quick wizz through NZ (one of them previously was working in Australia). But we also met a delightful slender guy who was 'splashing out' by staying every few nights in a unit with shower to sleep better, and rest better since he could not afford accommodation and he was sleeping in his car. When I asked him if he had work, he replied 'plenty'. He was driving touristic vans and 'was trying to save but not succeeding'. We heard the same story from Ann's friend who told us quite a few people have to resort to such measures. The world's keeps being unfair to a lot of decent people and this story shows once more how privileged we are. It is an irony that the same day the American Sillicon Valley Bank bankrupted taking again risks that should have not been allowed. The cruelty of our economy model!
